Video production is an extremely broad industry. There are plenty of different types of video production and it can be really easy to get lost in all the waffle and jargon.

What are the different types of video production?

It’s certainly an interesting question. It’s certainly one with many, many answers. It’s certainly not all going to fit into one article.

Nevertheless, we’re going to give you a simple breakdown to all the different types of video production you need to know about!

Different types of video production

Documentary

Documentaries are a bit different, these are long-form videos that usually explore a particular topic in depth. They are essentially documenting a subject in the form of a video and can vary completely in time length.

Documentaries are commonly seen on television but have made their way onto platforms like YouTube. They are the go to for exploring particular topics in depth.

Event

This one’s quite self explanatory. An event video is simply a video that captures any kind of event or ceremony. A lecture, live music performance, celebrity meet and greets - these would all count as event videos. You could count weddings in here too.

This style video is used to capture events and is commonly seen on YouTube and other social media platforms.

Product

Product videos are exactly what they sound like. These are commercial style videos of products and products alone. These differ from promotional videos in the sense that a product video is always focused on the product. It’s never not in the shot.

You can find these all over YouTube.

Wedding

Wedding videos are event videos but they’ve become their own style due to their popularity. A wedding video is simply a nice round up video of the whole ceremony, usually capturing everything from beginning until the end. Think of it as a highlight video.

These videos are typically just sent directly to the couple who commissioned the video for their keepsake. You can still find plenty of examples on YouTube though, usually as a portfolio piece to showcase what the creator can do.

Final Thoughts

There are plenty of different types of video production and it’s good to understand what each one is. A lot of them are self explanatory and you no doubt already know what they are but it still helps as a consumer or even a video producer to know the differences.

Don’t get me wrong, this is literally the tip of the iceberg. There are so many more types of video production but we’ve whittled our list down to some of more popular ones at the moment. Remember that a lot of these have been stopped because of the coronavirus pandemic but they were very popular beforehand and are arguably going to become just as popular afterwards.
