You might be in the process of creating video content or maybe you’re considering using video content for the coming year. You may have even tried video content in the past and it hasn’t worked out as expected.
No matter what your situation is, we’re going to give you five sure-fire ways to make better video content!
First things first, you need to know your audience.
Please, before you do any form of content work, realise who it is you’re producing the content for. We can’t stress this point enough.
If your video has no intended audience then it has no direction and with no direction, it’s not going to do anything for you.
Targeted content is always best. If you think you’re being too specific, you’re probably on the right tracks.
This goes hand in hand with our first point and is arguably just as important.
Make sure you have a clear message in mind.
Think of your message as your purpose, what do you want your video to achieve? It’s critical here to be specific. Choose one purpose and stick to it.
This could be anything - do you want to attract more customers? More followers? Show off some customer reviews? Help customers with product/service tutorial videos?
Whatever your message may be, keep it simple.
A quick word of caution here - don’t try to cram multiple messages into one video, it’s just confusing. Pick one key message and run with it.
It is said that the human attention span is now only eight seconds long. Eight measly seconds before our minds wander elsewhere.
What does this mean for your video content? Making the first 8 seconds of your content the absolute very best they can be.
Don’t get me wrong, this can be extremely difficult to get right. Some of your viewers will undoubtedly switch off from your content after the first 8 seconds no matter what you do, so don’t be too harsh on yourself.
Now what exactly you put into those first 8 seconds is entirely dependent upon the video. What I would say is to keep it very purpose centric. If the only thing your viewer sees is those first 8 seconds, you want them to at least go away with your message in mind.
This might sound quite self explanatory but it’s nevertheless a very important factor of your video content - the runtime.
You don’t ever want to make your video content too long because it’ll either put people off watching in the first place or it’ll lose them after the first few minutes.
Your video length should vary depending upon your message and the type of video it is. For instance, if you are producing a promotional video to increase sales of your new product, keep it under 1 minute long. However, if you’re producing a corporate video to help new employees understand your health and safety policy, a longer video upwards of 5 minutes would be fine.
I think the best piece of advice to follow here is keep it as short as possible no matter what video it is. Be as brutal as you can with your content.

Okay so you’ve got your finished video, now what?
Well, now is the time to get it out there! Market your video to the specific audience you identified at the very beginning of the process.
This is where a lot of people become stuck. They create a really good video and then wonder why it hasn’t performed for them. Unfortunately for us, just posting your video and expecting it to do the work for you is not a good strategy no matter how good the video is. You’ve got to market it effectively.
Now, it’s hard for us to suggest a single, guaranteed method of marketing for your video content without actually knowing what it is you’re producing. It again comes down to choosing the appropriate marketing strategy for your particular video.
This is why the first point on our list is so important. Defining your audience will solve a lot of these problems for you. For example, if you narrow your audience down to students between the ages of 18-25, you know that platforms like Facebook and Instagram will be a good choice to market your product/service. Whereas, if you’re targeting business professionals in a specific industry, you’re going to be hard pressed to find a more effective method than LinkedIn ads.
